A Federal Judge issued a temporary restraining order on Christmas Day 2025, preventing the US Government from arresting or deporting Imran Ahmed, a British researcher who runs the Center for Countering Digital Hate.
The Center for Countering Digital Hate is a non-profit organization that does research on social media and the spread of online hate. The work focuses mostly on protecting children online and their research has shined a light on the ways social media negatively impacts the mental health of children through the spread of eating disorders and self-harm content . They have been a thorn in the side of some of the largest and wealthiest corporations in the world such as Twitter, Meta, and Chat GPT. Their research has revealed the dark side of these profitable websites and they haven’t been eager to make changes that would lose them money.
Elon Musk, at the time the CEO of X, sued Mr. Ahmed and his organization in the past after they reported on the fact that hate speech against African Americans tripled in 2023 after his take over. That lawsuit was dismissed with prejudice with an anti-SLAPP ruling awarding them costs, since the lawsuit was clearly meant to silence the researchers. Musk did appeal that case and it is still pending before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Trump Administration Announces Intention to Exile Imran Ahmed for Criticisms of Social Media Companies
On the eve of Christmas Eve Marco Rubio, the Secretary of State, announced that Imran Ahmed’s visa would be revoked and he would be deported, despite him being a Legal Permanent Resident living in the US for five years with his US citizen wife and children. The next day Ahmed filed his lawsuit and on Christmas day a Federal Judge entered the temporary restraining order blocking the Trump administration from arresting and deporting him.
The current administration’s use of the immigration system as a weapon against those who disagree with them is alarming and more people should be concerned about this.
Watch him interviewed about all of this on PBS News.
